Tense. How to express your thoughts

    To understand how we should to build our English sentences when we want to share our thoughts with someone else.
    It's really important!

Let's revise your knowledge.

Question: - What have you already known about English Tenses? Present Simple, Continuous, Perfect,.. etc.
- When do we use it?
- What can you say about grammar rules of each tense?
- How would you express yourself on time point 1, 2,..., for example, with such sentenses "I read book"?

So, we have various Tenses, each Tenses has its own grammar construction.

For example, only Present Simple has auxilary verb do, does and only Present Simple express your daily routines.

Knowing grammar construction rules is very important!



1. Present Simple (Indefinite)

    We use Present Simple when the action describes our daily life and main question here:
"- What do you usually do?".

So if we want to express thought, for example, that we usually read books or like to read books we use Present Simple (point 4. picture. 3.).

This Tense express our daily life, and in such case we say:

I read books.
- Do you read books?
I don't like to read books.


Question: - What do you usually do on your life?

Hint: read, watch, walk, swim, play, learn, take, work, go.

2. Present Continuous (Progressive)

    We use Present Continuous when it describes the action that happens right now and the main question here is:
"- What are you doing right now?".

Present Continuous (point 5. picture. 5.) express thought what you are doing rigt now.

They are sitting at the cafe at the moment.
- Are they drinking coffee now?
They are not walking at the moment.



For example:
I am watching TV. (It mean you are watching TV right now.)
He is walking. (It mean He is walking on the some street just right now.)
She is learning English now. (the same learning right now.)
They are listening to music.
- What is she doing?

Question: - What are you doing right now?

3. Present Perfect

    We use Present Perfect when the action have (not) already finished till now, and main question here:
"- What have you already done?"

Present Perfect (point 6. picture. 7.) express thought that action has alredy happend till now and we don't care about time when it happened.

Ann has already bought foods.
They have already walked with their dog.
- Has Ann bought foods?
They have not walked yet.

For example:
I have already cooked pizza.
The girl has already done her homework.
My brother has won the match.
I have never been to London.
They have not visited the exhibition yet.

The Past Simple is used to express action which took place in the past.

They spent their vacation at Barcelona last summer.
- Did they spend their vacation at Barcelona?
They did not spend their vacation at New York.

For example:
We returned yesterday.
She finished school last year.
- Did he work there yesterday?

He didn't write a composition last month.

5. Past Continuous (Progressive)

The Past Continuous is used to express an action going on at a definite moment in the pastwhich took place in the past.

Past Continuous is process in the past at the specified moment.

They were dancing last evening at the party.
- Were they listening to modern music at that moment?
And of course, they were not working at 10 p.m. yesterday.

For example:
I was working in the field at that time.
We were gathering mushrooms the whole day.
- Was she watching News at 9 o'clock?
- Were they walking home when I met them?
I wasn't training there at that time.
They weren't discussing the novel when she came.

6. Past Perfect

The Past Perfect is used to express an action which took place before another past action or before definite moment. (picture 12. point 3.)

She said that she would go home as soon as she had passed her exam.

For example:
I had posted the letter by three o'clock.
We had cooked dinner before our guests came.
- Had she learned the poem by that time?

I thought that he had won the game.
She wrote that she left for the Far East.
